Military servicemen and women deserve our respect. Unfortunately, many veterans were exposed to asbestos in their service to America. Asbestos was used once in many industries from construction to shipbuilding, although it is now generally prohibited. This is because we finally realized the risks of asbestos exposure.

To understand the extent of asbestos, it is important to know why it is so popular. Although asbestos has been used by the ancient Greeks and Romans, it fell into oblivion until some of the industrial revolution. With the advent of the warm machines, and increased power, had people to a substance that insulation against heat and other such things would be. Asbestos suit this need.

Asbestos is a mineral that is part of the silicate family. The silicates are known for their ability to insulate itself against other forces known. As silicate, asbestos is resistant to heat, flame, chemicals, electricity, and degradability. In addition, asbestos has some useful features for themselves. It is flexible and has a high tensile strength, which means that it is simply added to a variety of materials.

It is therefore not surprising that asbestos was so widespread popularity with the rise of the machines. They found a niche in the construction industry, automobile industry, including the yards. It is because of this last industry, people who served in the U.S. Navy, were exposed to asbestos. Both individuals suffered Navy ships built and worked in the Navy high exposure to this material.

Although we now know that the substance is carcinogenic, it was not something that the U.S. military for most of the 20 Century again. In fact, the government made use of asbestos in ships ordered to protect the crew from fires and other emergencies on board. But instead of a possibly suffering from burns or smoke inhalation, the soldiers are now in danger of serious forms of cancer as lung cancer and mesothelioma, among other things.

Because of the proximity, poor ventilation and other aspects of the control of ships and submarines, it is no wonder that asbestos fibers in the air was such a problem. That is, if asbestos is the air that it is dangerous. From here, you can inhale microscopic fibers that may be lodged in the lungs. Also, some people may be fibers of the mouth, they can swallow it. Recorded fibers can become trapped in the esophagus and stomach, contribute to cancer such as the esophagus and pharynx.

Unfortunately, many veterans have no access to medical care that they need to deal with asbestos-related diseases.
